What is AKC Canine Good Citizen?
The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen program is built around ten practical skills that reflect good manners and responsible dog ownership. The evaluation looks at how a dog and handler work together through everyday situations such as greeting a friendly person, walking on leash, responding around distractions, and remaining with a trusted person for a short time.
CGC can provide a useful training goal for families who want to strengthen communication, manners, and confidence in real-life settings. It is open to purebred and mixed-breed dogs.
Is CGC preparation right for your dog?
CGC preparation may be appropriate when you want a clear framework for practicing everyday skills with your dog. It may be useful for families working on calm greetings, polite handling, leash manners, attention around people and dogs, response to common distractions, or the ability to settle while separated briefly from the owner.

Individualized CGC preparation
Happy Jack’s offers individualized CGC preparation rather than a one-size-fits-all class sequence. Current preparation options include three- and five-session paths. The appropriate path depends on the dog and handler, the skills that are already in place, and the areas that need more practice.
Training uses Happy Jack’s positive-reinforcement approach. Sessions focus on clear communication, manageable practice, owner coaching, and helping skills become useful in everyday situations.
CGC evaluation
Happy Jack’s also offers CGC evaluation-only appointments in the facility and, when appropriate and available, in the home. An evaluation measures the dog-and-handler team against the current AKC CGC test requirements.
Preparation and evaluation do not guarantee that a dog will pass the CGC test, earn a CGC certificate, or earn an official AKC CGC title when applicable. Dogs learn at different rates, and performance can be affected by the environment, distractions, comfort, and practice. Happy Jack’s provides thoughtful preparation and a fair evaluation without promising a particular result or timeline.
